MORSI ACCUSED OF ESPIONAGE, A MASSACRE IN CAIRO Mohamed Morsi

After 25 days of the removal of Egyptian President Morsi, Egypt is still racked by violence raging all over the country. Cairo was the scene of violent clashes between protesters linked to the Muslim Brotherhood who refuse military coup and demanding the return of Morsi. The security forces are stemming protests in the capital, on July 27 the Muslim Brotherhood speak of more than 200 people dead and about 5,200 injured, while according to Egyptian media the number of victims doesn't exceed 75.

Still according to Egyptian sources, the police would have shot directly to the crowd holding a sit-in near the October 6 Bridge, leaving the ground a hundred victims at least. According to our sources, many Egyptian citizens, close to the brotherhood but living in rural areas of the country, would receive about 10 euro per day from the organization to move to the capital and join the protesters.

The Egyptian authorities have announced that Morsi has been formally accused of espionage and conspiracy with the Palestinian group Hamas. These are the first official statements about the legal status of ousted Egyptian president. The charges against Morsi also refers to an incident in 2011, when the prison in Wadi el-Natroun, north of Cairo, was attacked by a commando that allowed the escape of about 30 members of the Brotherhood, including Morsi. The assault, which had caused the deaths of 14 guards, it was considered organized by the Muslim Brotherhood with the support of Hamas. For its part, Hamas has always denied any responsibility in the attack on the prison and Sami Abu Zuhri, the group's spokesman, said that the accusation towards Morsi is nothing more than a demonstration of the failure of the "coup" and has considered as an attempt to drag Hamas in Egypt's conflict.

The takeover of Morsi last year had raised hopes among the leaders of Hamas, which advocated a opening of the Rafah crossing and thus the end of Gaza's isolation. Yet despite relations between Egypt and Hamas are much improved compared to the years of Mubarak regime, the government of Morsi was still imposing restrictions on the border with Gaza. According Mukhaimar Abu Saada, a professor of political science at the University of Al Azhar, Hamas would be the biggest loser from the fall of Morsi. There are fears for a radicalization of the conflict at the Rafah border, in fact the new Egyptian government is increasing the blocks on the border with Gaza, causing contractions of Gaza's economy and fueling tensions with leaders of Hamas, which depend on the traffic of goods between Sinai and Gaza. Meanwhile, the Egyptian authorities are aware that the closure of the crossing is part of a series of measures to counter the jihadist militancy in Sinai, which has escalated significantly since 3 July.

In the last days there were reports about an alleged secret agreement between the Muslim Brotherhood and the Obama administration, according to which Morsi would transfer 40% of the territories of the Sinai to Hamas in exchange for $ 8 billion, facilitating progress towards the peace negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians. The agreement, signed by Morsi, the number two of brotherhood Khairat el Shater and the supreme guide of the Muslim Brotherhood Muhammad Badie, it was discovered after the military coup. According to a former member of the Government Morsi, the agreement would favored Israel, Hamas, the Muslim Brotherhood and Obama himself. The U.S. president has not denied that he had financially supported the rise to power of the Muslim Brotherhood (we are talking about 25 billion dollars), relying on the fact that political proximity between the Brotherhood and Hamas would allow a reduction of attacks against of Israel. It was the mediation of Morsi that allowed the end of violence between Hamas and Israel last November, with the approval of the international community.

The accusation turned towards Morsi does not certainly come unexpected, indeed, confirms the position of the Egyptian army, which has always seen with dislike Hamas. To support the theory of a plot between Morsi and the Palestinian group and then to legitimize the seizure of power by the army, the disclosure of the alleged secret agreement arrives on time. The coming months will still shaken by protests and violent repression, but while Egyptian forces will be concentrated to fill in the events in Cairo, in Sinai the situation could further escape from the control of the Egyptian authorities. Then no peace in the short term, indeed there are presenting the same obstacles that followed the fall of Mubarak. The next events, which is the constitutional referendum planned for the next four months, the parliamentary elections expected in early 2014 and the subsequent presidential elections, are very likely to be delayed just because of social instability that characterizes the country.
