The European Union is ready to support crisis management operation AFISM-CAR led by France and the African Union which have on the whole deployed 4800 soldiers in Central African Republic (CAR). On 5 December 2013, the Political and Security Committee (PSC) of the EU endorsed the African Union request (dated 21 November) for funding support: by PSC decision, 50 million euros will sustain the mission. This 50 million aid will be mobilised through the African Peace Facility as part of the European Development Fund and will cover the costs of allowances, accommodation and feeding the troops deployed in the field, as well as salaries of civilian personnel and various operational costs such as transport, communication or medical services.

Moreover, being the biggest donor of humanitarian aid to CAR within the whole international community, the EU has spent 20 million euros in 2013 and other 23 million from the 10th European Development Fund may be approved by the end of the year.

Finally, the European Commission is deploying its humanitarian air service called ECHO Flight, kind of an air bridge supporting terrestrial operations: in this case, EU airplanes will reach Douala, in Cameroon, and their load will be transported to Bangui and delivered to those who need it most. Assistance operation will be led by European Union experts entrusted with coordinating with other humanitarian agencies working in the field.

According to High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-president of the European Commission Catherine Ashton «this latest EU contribution of 50 million euros will help the AFISM-CAR to contribute, in close coordination with the United Nations and other partners, to a resolution of this crisis».
